Understanding Film Texts Screening Series.

Six weeks, one evening per week. Open to all, highly recommended for NAMI Film Workshop I-III students.

Participants in this Screening Series will find a casual and stimulating environment to share impressions, debate complexities, and explore the exciting phenomena of how film communicates and how we as an audience experience this communication. In this ongoing screening series topics will vary, but included in each Series will be screenings and discussions that explore one of the following: National Cinemas and Film Movements; Classic Hollywood Cinema; Documentary Films; Art, Avant-Garde, and Counter Cinema; Third World and Postcolonial Cinemas; Film Genre; and Authorship and Film. Guest speakers are invited and refreshments served.

Spring Session Dates: Monday, February 7th through March 14th
Time: 6:00-9:00 p.m.
Tuition: $225.00



Film/Digital Production Workshops I-III

Starting with Introduction to Film/Digital Production for those aspiring beginning students and progressing to Advanced Film/Digital Production, NAMI Workshop participants are carefully guided through the A-Z process of motion picture production by experienced facultymentors. This includes gaining experience with 16mm and super 16mm film formats, mini DV (digital video), DV Pro, and an introduction to 35mm film and HD (high definition) formats. Each NAMI Workshop is comprehensive and complete by design and each NAMI Workshop is also designed as a unit in a sequence that allows the student to progressively build and develop technical and artistic skills according to their own individual needs.

NAMI Workshop topics that are covered include: camera operation and set-up, lenses, lighting, sound recording and mixing, editing, graphics, and directing.

Film/Digital Production Workshop I (Introduction)

Learn what it takes to shoot like a pro and direct a small film crew. NAMI Workshop I consists of an introduction to 16mm film and mini-digital video production. Filmmaking is de-mystified as students get hands-on exposure to camera set-up and operation, lenses and aperture, lighting techniques, editing, and sound recording in a supportive environment. Preproduction planning and storyboarding is also emphasized to take participants to new levels of creativity. Students are given a basic introduction to non-linear digital editing systems. Prerequisite: None. However, highly recommended for this course is the NAMI Understanding Film Texts Screening Series.

Spring Session Dates: March 1st through May 19th.

Film/Digital Production Workshop II (Intermediate)

NAMI Workshop II covers advanced film/digital production techniques. This includes cinematography, advanced lighting, editing, sound recording, and audio mixing. Students work with sync-sound 16mm cameras as well as mini-digital video and digital video (DV) pro camera formats. Pre production planning and location scouting is emphasized as well as the legalities around obtaining permits, talent releases and music. Successfully working with crewmembers and organizing for the shoot is emphasized. Students edit on Apple’s Final-Cut Pro digital editing system. Participants in this Workshop learn what it takes to further their creative voice, shoot a demo reel, prepare work for entry into film festivals, and/or prepare for field internships. Prerequisite: NAMI Film/Digital Workshop I, or demonstrated experience in film/digital production. Highly recommended also for this Workshop is prior coursework in film studies, screenwriting, and/or the Understanding Film Texts Series.

Film/Digital Production Workshop III (Advanced)

NAMI Workshop III instruction focuses on furthering and refining technical skills and/or artistic voice. Participants work with their choice of format including super 16mm camera packages and DV Pro while being introduced to HD (high definition) and 35mm formats. Students in this Workshop explore advanced editing techniques on Apple's Studio Pro Production Suite, including professional audio and graphics, and will also work with DVD authoring applications. The legal aspects of low-budget filmmaking and producing are also covered. Preproduction and how to successfully work with large and small crews is emphasized. This is an excellent Workshop for those involved in commercial-industrial, broadcast, and/or corporate production, and for those seeking industry internships. Prerequisite: NAMI Film/Digital Workshop II or industrial/corporate experience in production.

NAMI Screenwriting and Producing Workshop.

Six weeks, two evenings per week. Open to all, highly recommended for NAMI Film/Digital Workshop students.

The art and craft of telling an emotionally compelling and original narrative is the heart of this course. This section instructs you in the principles of solid script construction and formatting including: plot, theme, genre, character development and dialog, script formatting and script revision. In this workshop, each student will receive individual attention in developing several short film scripts of their own origination. Additionally, students will learn how to find the best solution within the limitations of their own project to create a workable Production Budget and be introduced to the legal ins and outs of Producing. Students should bring at least (3) short, one paragraph film treatments or one short screenplay-in-progress to the initial class.

NAMI Nonlinear Editing I: Apple’s Beginning Final Cut Pro Workshop.

This class provides practical hands on instruction on the complete process of digital editing from digitizing footage into the computer through output to tape. Topics covered include how to mark and edit clips, types of edits, working with clips in the timeline, creating transitions, working with audio, motion effects, time remapping (slow and fast motion), color correcting and other effects filters, rendering options and titling. Also, we will discuss basic editing aesthetics and the ramifications of digital technology on traditional filmmaking techniques. NAMI is not an Authorized Apple Training Center, however in this intensive nonlinear editing Workshop NAMI students are guided through the official curriculum of the Apple Pro Training Series I that can lead to Apple Pro Certification. Prerequisite: None. NAMI Film/Digital Workshop I is highly recommended (can be taken concurrently).

Tuition: $795.00 ($695.00 for students currently enrolled in any NAMI Production Workshop).


NAMI Nonlinear Editing II: Intermediate Final Cut Pro HD Workshop.

This six-week class provides instruction on editing true high definition and film footage on Apple's Final Cut Pro HD editing system. We will cover using the Final Cut Pro platform for aspects of editing with high definition and film footage including options for digitizing HD and film footage, editing with the online and offline resolutions, EDL (edit decision list) options, film matchback with Cinema Tools, and recapturing offline resolution footage for online quality. In addition this class would cover aspects of working in FCP that the beginning class only touched on including Apple's Soundtrack and LiveType programs. Prerequisite: NAMI Nonlinear Editing I, or demonstrated ability with Final Cut Pro 4 HD.
