I can't get over how fast time is passing. More and more people are calling asking what I would suggest they purchase their son/daughter/husband/wife who is studying film or actively engaged in the industry. Well, I can just go by what other people are doing. Just recently a young lady purchased a slate for her husband as an anniversary gift and a young man purchased a Harrison Changing Tent for his girlfriend as a birthday gift. Other budget minded gifts that have been purchased are books, color charts and gray cards. If you can go a little higher on the budget try Kata cases, especially the Kata briefcase for the writer, producer, director candidates. There are so many useful items, and it is really difficult to mention just one or two. If you have a sizeable budget, I would suggest filters, as every filmmaker likes to build a personal filter collection. Even if your budget is not what you hoped for, you can purchase one filter at a time. There are also Sekonic light meters, which will last a lifetime if properly cared for. Additionally, I never heard of anyone turning down a camera as a gift. The list goes on and on.
As lighting professionals are using more and more gel, two interesting pamphlets available are "rosco filter facts" (A handbook on using Rosco filters for controlling light in film and video production) and "the ART of light" by Lee Filters. Both have very useful information. The next time you stop in pick up a copy. If you are not local, request a copy be inserted with your next equipment or supply order.
National Academy of the Moving Image (NAMI)
The NAMI classes were very successful. We have now finished "Learning Film Techniques Even Though You Are Shooting Video" and "Cinematography and Advanced Lighting". In fact, this class will meet again on the 16th to review the footage shot at the last class on the 2nd. Everyone was delighted to learn that we would sponsor one more class in order to review their final work. The "Camera Assistant Class" will hold their final session on the 11th. When we announced that we would take a short break for the holidays, we had many disappointed faces. They are eager to keep the momentum going with more classes. After the holidays, we have many more interesting classes planned as well as some exciting seminars. Please keep in touch for an updated listing.
